#Excellence in Everything

For the past few years, Ingenuity has been approached and selected by a number of academic institutions, organizations, and groups in the IT community for many things, most notably, to ask us to take part in the innovation and development of programs that thrusts towards the betterment of the IT academe, or in the support of the various industry activities here in the city and elsewhere in the Philippines.

Ingenuity has had a full several years in this regard. Let us share with you our little achievements that hopefully, in their own little ways, contributed to the success of the IT industry as a whole. The following feature the team's collective effort to help the IT/Tech community and the academe and also to spearhead the promotion of innovation and technopreneurship, and inspire more people (not just the young) to pursue IT-related careers and livelihood.

I. OJT Program
Within the curriculum of IT Studies here in the Philippines is the requisite 200-500 or so hours of On-the-Job Training (internship). Most just spend this time interning for the run of the mill corporate-type or government companies that delegate tasks to them that have little or nothing to do with their college course. The rest may be a little bit more lucky in that they can intern with a legit IT company which would, hopefully, teach them a thing or two about the real world. But as IT companies are few and the available internship slots fewer, successfully securing an IT-related and IT-relevant internship is difficult to come by.

In this vein, therefore, we devised a program that would be beneficial to both us and the interns. Enrich the talents of the talent pool, as it were. Patterned after a modular training we have developed and improved over the course of 4 years of continuous OJTrainings, we are proud our special OJT program where we train interns in the basics of Python-django and allow them to apply their new learnings in developing their own projects that they could market after (if they choose to do so).

Based off from this idea, we even had a 5-week training especially for graduating students of the University of the Philippines Mindanao using the same module of training.

Ingenuity's first ever batch of OJTs - who later became Ingeneers :) Jasper, Aljohn, Joseph, Kevin G, Pat, Roy, Andy with their mentors Mancio and Chester (2011)

The 2nd OJT Batch were a more quiet and pensive group - from UP Min: Jen, Bash, Chez, and JM (both not in pic); from STI Davao: Jan; from Ateneo de Davao University: RK and Sean; from UIC Bonifacio: Faith and Kevin, with mentor June Millan (back to the camera) (2012)

The Batch 3 guys are fun-loving, outgoing, and hungry for french fries (our little inside joke): Marga, Roddiek, Erik, Hitesh, Ray, Nap (covered), Jason, Georgi, Hans, Jessie, Nonoy, and Kevin (2013)

Batch 4 are the latest guys to have graduated from our OJTraining - Ruth and Mae (in blue blouses) are Marketing interns and the rest are IT/CS interns: (seated in front) Justin, Herzon, (L-R:) Jean, JV, Nurfitri, Naomi, Raph, and Shanie (2014)

Special 5-week Python-Django Training for University of the Philippines Mindanao graduating students (2012)

And our mid-year interns from 2013: from ADDU Jan & Felicia; from MSU-IIT Kim (2013)

Presently, we are thinking about devising a way to train the professionals: IT faculty from the academe, IT practitioners, and other web/mobile developers to learn more skills that will enable them to enrich their knowledge as well as cascade this knowledge to others. We will be rolling out a training on this as soon as we sort out the details so watch out for that! :)

II. Participation in IT Community events
a. Speakers
Organizations, schools, and other institutions request us to send over our people for IT workshops, conferences, or other meets. We are very glad that most of our developers and designers gamely volunteer their time and effort to this end. Rather than keeping the knowledge to ourselves, the thrust of our team is to share it so that the Davao IT scene will be richer with talents that have a varied and globally-relevant skills. Truly, giving back to the community is one advocacy we are so lovingly invested in.

b. Sponsorships
We are also very supportive to various activities of various organizations and institutions in the IT industry here in the city, that is why we never fail to sponsor or support in any way that we can all activities that aim to push forward the academe and the industry as a whole.

These are a few of the activities that we have sponsored throughout the years:
Mindanao Conference for IT Students 2010

BizBoost Entrepreneurial Talk 2012

PSITS XI Grand Assembly

Google I/O Extended by GBG Davao 2014

DevCon Code Camp 2013

Davao Graphic Designers Community 1st Meet Up (2014)

Ingenuity is a Bronze Sponsor at PyCon Philippines 2014

c. Organizing activities
In order to put emphasis on Ingenuity's thrust for community awareness and development, we are also helping out the IT/tech community to organize activities that support this goal. One of the most notable activities that we have helped organize is the Startup Weekend Davao. Members of our team are also volunteering their time and effort in the support of SW Davao, which is now on its 3rd year, and going stronger.

And we have also helped organize a local group of Python enthusiasts here in Davao City who meet frequently and conduct talks, workshops, and others called the Davao DurianPy. This group is a vibrant, dynamic collection of developers, IT students, and other Python supporters and led by two of our very own Ingeneers Earvin and Pat.

d. Joining in other IT/Tech related Activities

Ingenuity Team was part of the 1st ever Geeks on A Beach at Boracay Island, Philippines (2013)

and again at the Geeks on A Beach 2 at Movenpick Hotel, Mactan, Cebu (2014)

III. Consulting for the IT Academe

Just recently, we were contacted by the Dean and key faculty members of the University of Southeastern Philippines Computer Studies for a dialogue. They wanted relevant, real-life input from the IT industry as to the needs and skillsets that prove to be useful to their graduates in the real world. Ingenuity was one of the few IT companies in Davao that they approached for help. The outcome of these dialogues will be the university's basis in the revision of their curriculum. This was one memorable encounter that we had, and it deserves another blog post altogether, so keep posted!

So you see, above are just a few of our efforts in keeping not just our company, but also our community globally-competitive and up to date with the latest in the IT/Tech industry. As always, we make use of our Filipino ingenuity, our street smarts, our resourcefulness, and creativity in helping each other out so that we may push the boundaries of Davao City talent to the forefront. Slowly, but surely, we are getting there.

Sharing Experiences with students at PSITS General Assembly

In line with our efforts of giving back to the community, I, as the Business Development Officer, was sent to represent Ingenuity, and talk about what it is going to be like after graduation to junior and senior students who attended the Philippine Society of Information Technology Students General Assembly last 19th of July 2014. I was able to participate in most of the organization's events back then when I was still a student, so I pretty much knew the things that I needed to share.

The talk mainly consisted of what kind of companies students may get into after graduation, with Ingenuity as an example, and what is expected from them as fresh grads. Some current events were introduced, as well as an introduction to the Davao IT community status quo and some ways on how students and fresh grads can get involved. Additional tips and reminders were also thrown in as a bonus.

I was surprised seeing how the organization has improved over the years, now involving 39 universities and colleges, much more than ever before. It was, however, not surprising how most of them, if not shy to talk about their experiences or respond to my questions, were unaware of what will happen after they graduate.

This expresses the concern on the gap between the academe and the industry, as most graduates do not fit the need of the industry, thus needing additional training prior to employment.  A dilemma constantly being addressed by various groups such as PSITS and other IT-concerned organizations.

The 39 Universities and Colleges, having one or a pair of student representatives, were able to be present on the event, namely:

ACES Polytechnic College, ACLC Tagum College, AMA Computer College, Assumption College of Davao, Ateneo de Davao University, Brokenshire College, Cor Jesu College, Davao Central College, Davao del Norte State College, Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology, Davao Vision Colleges, Inc., DMMA College of Southern Philippines, East West College, Holy Child College of Davao, Holy Cross of Davao College, Intercity College of Science and Technology, Interface Computer College, Job and Business Success Academy, John Paul II College, Jose Maria College, Legacy College of Compostela, Inc., MATS College of Technology, Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku, Northlink Technological College,  Philippine Women's College, Polytechnic College of Davao del Sur,  San Pedro College, Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology, St. Mary's College of Bansalan, Inc., St. Mary's College of Tagum, St. Peter's College of Toril, Inc., STI Davao,  Tagum Institute of Technology Foundation, UM Digos College, UM Tagum College, University of Mindanao (Main), University of Southeastern Philippines, University of the Immaculate Conception, University of the Philippines-Mindanao

START UP WEEKEND DAVAO 3

That time of the year is here again when budding entrepreneurs both young and mature alike brew up a dizzying brainstorm of ideas to pitch and work on as their own startups in all of 54 hours. Organized here in Davao by Dulce Lada, Gay Viray, Angel Abella, and our very own CEO John Naranjo, this is the 3rd Startup Weekend here in the city.

This year, Ingenuity is again one of the sponsors and Pat, Andrea, Nap, and myself went to volunteer our services to the event. It was a busy busy day since there were a lot of attendees this year.

Of the 74 total participants, 41 pitched their ideas. The Finster Bldg. conference hall at the Ateneo de Davao  University where the event was held this year, was a flurry of activities as idea pitchers began selling their ideas to their peers. Of the 41 ideas, 12 were chosen to be this year's potential startups.

As usual, mentors were at hand to provide their respective expertise, industry and business know-how to the budding entrepreneurs. They were:

The event winners were CITIHUB an app for places & events at a certain locality (1st), INSTARENT a web/mobile platform for searching and matching rentals (2nd), and HEALTHLINK an app that connects patients and doctors whenever, wherever (3rd).

We at Ingenuity are very proud of the CITIHUB group since one of their members is our past OJT Trainee JV Dagaang. He was also mentioned specifically by the judges as having a very clean, very streamlined design for their winning app! Congratulations!

After the event, participants, kibitzers, judges, mentors, and everyone proceeded to Primo Grill for a nightcap (beers & rousing intelligent conversation). Everyone got to meet and had a chance to converse with the mentors and judges, especially those who jetted to Davao just for the occasion.

All in all, it was another year of success! Hopefully, by the next Startup Weekend, we can have more hands-on organizers, volunteers, and support group so that our beloved event would get elevated to the next level. Go, we can do it!

Special thanks are also in order for Dom Cimafranca, Asst. Dean of Computer Studies at the Ateneo de Davao University for his full support to SWDavao3. And of course, to all the volunteers who devoted their time and efforts for a whole weekend just to see this event to the end, you are priceless! To our very own NAP CALUB, reprezheeent!
